Site Information
Location
St. Mary's is located at St. Mary's College of Maryland in beautiful St. Mary's City, Maryland. It is also conveniently located in the middle of nowhere. St. Mary's is extremely humid, the dorms and buildings are ridiculously spread apart, and a walk to the dining hall is like schlepping across deserts and mountains.
Dorms
The dorms are under constant renovation and thus the dorms for habitation have never been the same. Each floor belongs to one hall. Each floor is then separated into two sections consisting of three rooms each. Every three rooms get their own lounge, microwave, etc. There is also a bathroom in each section. Each bathroom has an actual shower and has a locking door. It is designed after a personal bathroom. That also means that people fight for the showers in the morning.
The male dorms form a quad that serves as a "Meet Market". The girl dorms serves as a breeding gronds for the famously ubiquitous frogs.
Food
The food is amazing. However the walk to the dining hall is excruciating. The girls have to walk the farthest. They have to, pass the male dorms, cross a small desert, pass a pond, schlep up a hill, pass another pond where two male ducks are constantly attempting to mount each other, go under a bridge, and then you arrive at the dining hall. At Lancaster, you walk across the quad.
Everyday there are different types of ethnic foods. Then there is the waffle maker. Batter is set out and you make your own waffles. There is also a salad bar, ice cream, cereal, and make your own sandwich. Most days there will be pizza slices the size of your thumbnail.
History
St. Mary's is the first and foremost site of CTY. However as of 2006 the site is no longer in existance. As of 2006, the site has been removed from serivce. The closure of the site was an administrative decision by Baltimore. Various hypotheses about the reason include: the awful weather; poor campus layout for the program (buildings are too spread out!); staff/administrative issues; lack of interest by students (The food was better than any other site, though). No one is really sure which one or ones truly impacted this decision. But protest and call because believe me you want this site back!
Misc
As of the second session 2005, Gender Bender Day had been removed, but during Week Two, which is dubbed Spirit Week, things like pajama day, inside out day, toga day, and of course dress your RA day occured. Mao is a phenomenon, as is the Little Green Gopher song (Serkan's hall '05.2 performed that if you remember) . Unoriginal activities are known to occur, and Passionfruit wasn't started there till 2005, when three alums of the program who were on staff organized it. However, it has its own unique traditions, such as Sex in a Pan. Watch out for Hill Rolling Rash! Hill roll at your own risk! There are also some pretty crazy frogs there. It also smells like wetlands when you are walking to meals (Brackish water. The swamps create their own food, for God's sake.). To tell the truth St. Mary's was a great site.
Frank Wang was at St. Mary's 05', though it is not known where he was before that. Plotting, perhaps.
The Bell, always famous for going off as you walked directly past it, was a historic landmark of St. Mary's. Actually, it was the only landmark.
The site was much "younger" in terms of student age than most of the other sites. In 2005, for example, there were only about half a dozen nomores involved with the program at St Mary's.
