Course Description
From the CTY Catalog (1999):
Designed to introduce students to the precepts of sustainable development, Environmental Engineering focuses on the interplay between humans and their environment. Students study the causes, controls, and prevention of environmental contamination. Covering topics including hydrology, atmospheric sciences, soil and water chemistry, and radioactive waste management, they begin to assess the competing demands of a rapidly growing society and the ecosystems we live in.
As budding environmental engineers, students seek out the common ground between economic prosperity and environmental responsibility. Labs, lectures, and readings are supplemented with project proposals, impact statements, and debates. Students develop a final course project on an engineering problem of their choosing. Projects could include designing and developing a waste treatment plant and/or creating an environmental emergency plan.
