I once again had to decline. I hardly knew him or any reason he was interested in tradition except to become monarchy. They then raised the question of how I could do this as a non-nevermore, so I explained that at JHU the title of nevermore carries no significance in the coronation of a monarch and that only knowledge, passion and commitment are taken into consideration. Once my hallmates thought I was lost during a storm because they were unable to call my international number and another time I had gone to Gillman hall during unstructured time and was thought to be going out of bounds. Gillman hall is perfectly within bounds and some classes were taken there. I know that although 22.1 was very successful, I've disappointed a lot of people through simply having the attitude I did and messy negotiations. I know well that no position holder should ever put themself in the place where such events can occur, but I also seek some understanding. At the time I made them, the decisions I made were the best possible ones to ensure the best possible outcome for JHU culture. And I still wouldn't have changed many of them today. If it makes any difference, I consulted my successor and other site's position holders and used their input as guidance at various points in time. And never once did any of them go directly against my judgement or reasoning. And if anyone reading this still doubts my position as a non-nevermore, there's nothing I can say to you except to consider that (especially at less tradition-heavy sites) the spread of tradition through people willing and capable of doing so is the main priority. Although it's ideal to have someone of many years and about to leave, what do you do if none of them are ready to do so? Or even existent? A position holder should not be defined by something as trivial as the years they have left, but instead by something deeper. Like how many years worth of solidarity they can give back to their community. For now I'll let the pen drop and leave you with my story and let you make of this what you will.===== |
