I’m going to start by pouring some “SKL” on the ground for all those who couldn’t be here today. CTY is where I have met people scarily alike myself, alongside people who could not be more different from myself, and yet we’ve all come together to create this crazily incredible community. Hi y’all, I’m Annie, and I’ve been your Holder of the Duck, King James, and Co-Blammo God for Carlisle 24.2. I’m going to start by pouring some “SKL” on the ground for all those who couldn’t be here today. So how this works is that we’ll have all the position holders give their speeches and pass down positions, and then I’ll open the floor up to nomores—those who are aging out—and nevermores—those who are unable to return to CTY. If we have time after that, anyone who wants can make a speech! Now, hopefully all of you saw the Passing of the Duck Wednesday evening, but, in case you missed it, the Duck has been passed to Quinn and the Duck 1.0 has been passed to Sydney. King James is our session 2 “rave god” position—this is the person who you can go to to learn everything raving, from basics to more advanced moves. I think we all know who this is going to… Now, some of you might not know blammo, as we did not play this year, but it is an assassin-like game played with spoons that typically takes place at CTY. We were the blammo gods this year, and, in case blammo returns next year, we are passing this position on to Serena! Alright, so this is my third year of CTY and also my third site—I was at Santa Cruz 2022, Lancaster 2023, and now, Carlisle 2024. Although I’ve quite literally gone to CTY all over the US, taken three very different classes, and had three different excellent colors of lanyard, there has been one thing, other than forcing people to play SET, that has been completely constant throughout my three years of CTY: the people. I know, I know, that was very predictable and cliché of me. But, genuinely, it’s true. To Kendra, my roommate at Santa Cruz, the first person I met at CTY, to Ellie, who I’ve spent the most time at CTY with, to Griffin, who I text all the time even though we live close to 2000 miles apart, to Sydney, who kept me warm in the freezing ATS, to Inda, who was my TA at Santa Cruz and instructor this session, to Soma, the best TA ever, and all of their “I believe you”s, “Absolutely not”s, and “penalties”, to Dave, who introduced me to Hagoromo and pure math, to Bragan the ghost, to all of the fantastic RAs who have supported me, and to every other person who I’ve been so incredibly lucky to share CTY with. Y’all truly are what make this place so special—it’s one of the places where, and I know I speak for many of us when I say this, I can truly be me for the nerdy, math-y, theatre kid I am. While I will never return to CTY as a student again, the memories I have made with all of you will stick with me for the rest of my life: my hall’s talent show act at Santa Cruz (it was a very unfortunate parody of WAP), the 0.6 mile hike through the woods to class at Santa Cruz, the Soggy Sars Sue Slap, the Anya-induced-fire-alarm-thunderstorm-fiasco of 2023, paper cup meals, correct manhole, never-ending games of Moist Soil, Raving-related injuries, tree-gate, National Plumbers,, the Blammo emails and cancellations, Spoon Peter and other spoon creations, raving with six rolls of tape on my head, getting glow-stick juice on that one corner of the F&M gym (oh and part of the ATS but we don’t talk about that), the haunted proof, Debbie the math puppet, the Greek-o-meter, Starcrash with Gaynor’s excellent commentary (highly recommend), making enemies with RAs at water day (also highly recommend... especially if the RA is Gaynor), American Pie, singing in the piano room in Armstrong, dramatically falling off my chair while working on a project and having my partner immediately call me out as a theatre kid (I mean, he’s not wrong), washing the Duck for the first time in MANY MANY years, not seeing stairs at the 2nd dance, walking around on weekends blasting ragtime music, blending into King God Jamie with Sydney, having my hall trade some of our faces like Pokemon cards, and all of the little conversations I’ve had with CTYers, RAs, TAs, instructors, and other staff in the passing moments, that truly have made this place feel like home for three weeks each year.
