Baltimore is well known for having a lack of traditions.  It is one of the newest sites and we just started importing traditions like Passionfruit; we still need more people from tradition heavy sites to come to Baltimore and be a rebel to bring the traditions.  In 08.1, students organized a drag day.  However, RAs were forbidden from participating, and the administration did not officially organize it.  In 08.2, it was less concerted and organized.

The lawn used for Meet Market and outdoor activities is known as the Gentle Slope. It borders ANMR I, ANMR II and the cafeteria, and is surrounded by a brick walkway and park benches.
Caveman is an activity that started in 08.1 and was created by RAs, Shaun and Albert. It basically consisted of making paper clubs, grunting, and running around attacking other activities. The administration questioned the activity due to "violence" and its fate is to be decided.

===Ninja===

Ninja was the followup to Caveman and was also by Albert and Shaun(AKA Sub-Zero). It was basically the same thing as Caveman, but with staffs that were sometimes used as javelins. Due to a ninja attack, a ultimate frisbee game was lost because the attackers distracted a team from making the tieing point. The activity's fate is also yet to be decided.

Dances played sub-par music, much to the dismay of most of 07.2.  However, it is improving. It is true that a canon is starting up.  Song requests have been taken advantage of, with Tunak Tunak Tun being introduced in 08.1. However, song requests were broken in 08.2, so Canon importing has been slowed.  Glowstick raving was also introduced during "Sandstorm" in 08.1 and has been carried on into 08.2.

Baltimore. Well, what everyone says about the lack of traditions is quite true, and it's also true that the RAs are generally very strict, although some RAs may be very, very laid back. In 07.2, flashlights and sleepovers were banned (*gasp*), although with a bit of sneaking around and hiding you could manage to get into each others' rooms. The ban against sleepovers has been removed as of 08.1. Neighboring dorm rooms could also tap messages with Morse Code through the wall. Tylenol, Advil, Aspirin, and Ibuprofen were all confiscated by RA's, but it's handy to stash a few in your pillow or wardrobe just in case.  However, there is a vending machine with such medications.

The food was a lot better 07.2 than that of other years, there being French fries, pizza, grilled cheese, hot dogs, pasta, and a sandwich and salad bar everyday. The macaroni and cheese was amazing, but it was terrible in 08.1. The scrambled eggs got runny and goopy though... and the food was basically the same thing every day.  There's also a person who serves ice cream.

Okay, I have been here.  It's not too bad, and it may be the strictest, but it's really not as bad as it sounds.  The fobs work all the time, at least they did last year (2005); however, TAs patrol it.  However, with deception, underground tunnels, and a bit of pad-footing, you can get back to your dorm. There is no canon, as mentioned, but the songs aren't too bad.  The quad is pretty good, and there are French fries and hamburgers every day.  The dorm rooms are also very nice, with carpets.  Plus, there is a whole building for all the boys and one for all the girls, so you don't have to stand by the door to your friend's building and shoot rubber bands at his window usually.

There is one thing JHU is famous for:  Benedict!  Hi, Benedict/ Zeus, I hope you're reading this, but you probably aren't.  I was the friend of that guy you wanted to "run for Benedict next year."

Who is Benedict?  He's famous, that's who he is.  Why?  I don't know.  He's famous for being famous.  He went around to all the dorms, writing "Benedict Day" on all the holiday calendars for the middle Wednesday. Not much happened on Benedict Day, except for Benedict sneaking up on people and yelling, "Happy Benedict Day!"  If you plan on going to JHU, perhaps you should run for Benedict!

But it's no Lancaster; this is like CTY for trainees.  If you go to Lancaster your first year, you could drown in the overwhelming tradition!  Of course, if you go to Baltimore, you could drown in the overwhelming lack of tradition.  -Max K.

Ok, Baltimore may be the strictest site, but during 08.1 there were tons of kids from other countries that you would never have met at other sites. Also, rules are meant for breaking! Finding out ways to break the rules is entertainment unto itself. What other sites have people tapping morse code to talk? What other sites have people looking for underground passageways?

===Sleepovers===

In 07.2, sleepovers were banned.  This was due to a conflict in rules--CTY administration did not allow sleepovers without transportation of mattresses, while JHU housing did not allow transportation of mattresses due to its classification as a fire hazard.  However, in 08.1 and 08.2, this was resolved--CTYers could sleep over on weekends if they moved their sheets/blankets, but not their mattresses.  Depending on your RA, it is possible to have discreet sleepovers on non-legal nightsUnfortunately, sleepovers on the last night of 08.2 were banned, causing anger to many nevermores.

I second that Johnny, we have gotten our first drag day :)

The Baltimore site uses the actual campus of Johns Hopkins University. Although it houses the main administration for CTY, it was not made into an actual site until fairly recently. It is also considered in popular belief to be the strictest site, and has the fewest formal, site-wide traditions. Baltimore is infamous among CTYers at other sites for passing down controversial new rules.

Dorms

The girls' and boys' dorms are known as AMR I and AMR II, respectively. AMR I houses the administrative headquarters, as KW does at Carlisle. Both quads have very tight security, and are guarded at all times. However, it is possible to enter either building without using a keyfob using a roundabout pathway, although the keyfob is required for local stairs. There is a labryinth of tunnels and hallways underneath the two buildings (and the rest of the campus) and possibly a secret passageway between the two. All dorms are air conditioned, some bathrooms are. More detailed information can be found at Baltimore/places

Traditions

Baltimore is well known for having a lack of traditions. It is one of the newest sites and we just started importing traditions like Passionfruit; we still need more people from tradition heavy sites to come to Baltimore and be a rebel to bring the traditions. In 08.1, students organized a drag day. However, RAs were forbidden from participating, and the administration did not officially organize it. In 08.2, it was less concerted and organized.

The Rape Buttons

The "rape buttons" are emergency buttons that are attached to poles with a blue ball light above and when hit, lights up, sirens sound, and campus security arrives. Why we called it the rape button is a mystery.

Meet Market

Meet market is after 9:00 and lasts for an hour and is basically social hour on the Gentle Slope. It is supervised by RAs who are there to prevent and discourage "risque activities." Occasionally, there is an impromptu dance. In 08.1 and 08.2, there were several dances either at the front of AMR I or AMR II.

The lawn used for Meet Market and outdoor activities is known as the Gentle Slope. It borders ANMR I, ANMR II and the cafeteria, and is surrounded by a brick walkway and park benches.

Dances

As of 06.1, Baltimore now has a set canon (not in order):

  • American Pie - Don McLean
  • Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
  • Blister in the Sun - The Violent Femmes
  • Everytime We Touch - Cascada
  • Sandstorm - DaRude
  • Forever Young - Alphaville
  • Let It Be - The Beatles

As of 07.2:

  • Hey There Delilah - Plain White T's (subject to change)
  • Livin' La Vida Loca - Ricky Martin (subject to change)
  • Build Me Up Buttercup - The Foundations

As of 08.1 and 2:

  • Cotton Eyed Joe - Unknown
  • Satisfaction - Benny Benassi
  • Don't Stop Believin' - Journey

Dances played sub-par music, much to the dismay of most of 07.2. However, it is improving. It is true that a canon is starting up. Song requests have been taken advantage of, with Tunak Tunak Tun being introduced in 08.1. However, song requests were broken in 08.2, so Canon importing has been slowed. Glowstick raving was also introduced during "Sandstorm" in 08.1 and has been carried on into 08.2.

Rules about dances are enforced, but not strictly. At 08.1 and 08.1, there was grinding at impromptu dances, but people would crowd around them to make them hard to detect.

General Information

While it's false that the RAs are generally very strict, SRAs may be strict (especially SRA Ben). In 07.2, flashlights and sleepovers were banned, although with a bit of sneaking around and hiding you could manage to get into each others' rooms.

During lunch, here is always some fried potato product, pasta, a few types of pizza, hamburgers, cake or other sugary desserts, and fruits. The macaroni and cheese was amazing, but it was mediocre in 08.1. The scrambled eggs got runny and goopy though... and the food was basically the same thing every day. There's also a person who serves ice cream.

Sleepovers

In 07.2, sleepovers were banned. This was due to a conflict in rules--CTY administration did not allow sleepovers without transportation of mattresses, while JHU housing did not allow transportation of mattresses due to its classification as a fire hazard. However, in 08.1 and 08.2, this was resolved--CTYers could sleep over on weekends if they moved their sheets/blankets, but not their mattresses. Depending on your RA, it is possible to have discreet sleepovers on non-legal nights. Unfortunately, sleepovers on the last night of 08.2 were banned, causing anger to many nevermores.
