Hello CTYer. I don't know where you are in the world right now but I hope you're doing well and you've remembered your password ;). I was JHU Empress in 22.1 and I thought I'd leave this here, just incase the news didn't reach you.
Well, we're still out there. Tradition has definitely been hindered at a lot of sites (there were a number of covid outbreaks, problems with staff not knowing what to do, all that jazz) and even more so by CTY's site cancellations. Don't shoot the messenger, but skidmore has been temporarily cancelled as a site due to ongoing staff shortages from last year. A lot of CTYers floating around server 42 and other community portals have been more than angry and getting a foul taste of de javu, but that's not what I'm here to talk about. I'm here to say that despite all that, there's still hope for tradition of the past, present and future.
I've said this before but I think "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" is the unofficial mantra of my dedicated site, JHU… it's one I think a lot of other people from so many different sites are starting to uphold too, because if anything what happened over covid and what is happening now is getting people (more than ever) to band together and fight for tradition. Is some of it dying? Yes, yes it is, but that's how it goes and I think we would both agree it may be for the best. Traditions were made because people were passionate about spreading messages that resonated with them onto future generations… and if those stories and those beliefs didn't connect with people anymore they lost popularity, but that's ok. It belongs to the kids of the present, and right now the kids of the present are working hard to remember. Site specific traditions are becoming more general, CTYers are working harder than ever to record what was whilst also bringing to life what could be. Not everything will be salvaged, but there are (as much as I hate to say it) some things that aren't with salvaging. The community has been working SO hard and I couldn't be more honored to have been a CTYer through these apocalyptic times.
Even admin are starting to realize what a fundamental part of CTY life tradition is, and they've been more supportive than usual with regards to promoting tradition. They've started to take note that unreasonable tradition requirements shoot themselves in the foot, as tradition is such a vital part of the CTY experience. They REALLY messed up last year with staffing organization and I've heard my fair share of horror stories from 2022, but they're definitely starting to get it. *touches wood*
Jon Good still loves you, We all love each other and I hope you're doing well. ~Switch
