This course is a survey of Eastern Europe beginning with the Treaty of Versailles, when Europe was created much as we know it today, and ending in the present. After a brief historical introduction to the region, attention will be given to a number of topics, including the development of authoritarianism and totalitarianism in the region, the Russian Revolution, the Cold War, the devolution of the Communist system from the death of Stalin to the death of Chernenko, Stalinist resistance in the East, the role of the U.S., and the problems of economic change. This course is a survey of Eastern Europe beginning with the Treaty of Versailles, when Europe was created much as we know it today, and ending in the present. After a brief historical introduction to the region, attention will be given to a number of topics, including the development of authoritarianism and totalitarianism in the region, the Russian Revolution, the Cold War, the devolution of the Communist system from the death of Stalin to the death of Chernenko, Stalinist resistance in the East, the role of the U.S., and the problems of economic change.
