Course Description
From the CTY Course Catalog (1996):
This course is taught at the first-year college level. It provides a systematic introduction to the main principles of physics. Although a prior calculus course is not required, basic concepts of calculus are introduced and used in the course. For this reason, students must have strong backgrounds in precalculus mathematics, including knowledge of trigonometry and analytic geometry. The course covers selected topics from the College Board's Advanced Placement Physics B syllabus. Students cover as many topics as possible. The daily schedule typically includes three hours of class and two hours or more of lab work. In the past, class lectures and demonstrations included mechanics, thermal behavior of gases, wave motion, geometric and wave optics, magnetism, DC circuits, special relativity, and the quantum nature of matter. Laboratory work covers techniques of measurement and error analysis, determination of gravitational acceleration, refraction and diffraction of light waves, simple circuit analysis, and the magnetic deflection of electrons.
This course will help students prepare for the AP Physics B Examination given in May, 1997. However, students should arrange with their schools to complete the AP Physics B syllabus, if needed, before taking the examination.
