Social Media: Discourse and Society
Social Media: Discourse and Society (SOCM) was a cancelled CTY course meant for the Institute for Advanced Critical and Cultural Studies at New Haven, but was then discontinued after the announcement of the move to Carlisle.
Course Description
From the CTY Course Catalog (2018):
Spurred on by the rapid growth of new media technologies, individuals have become bolder about broadcasting their personal experiences and political beliefs. The development of this new digital landscape challenges previous conceptions of what the public sphere is, and has created many heated debates about free speech, privacy, and anonymity. This course introduces students to the field of new media studies with a close examination of the effects of social media on identity politics. Using critical theory, students examine social media case studies involving free speech, net neutrality, anonymity, and political discourse.
