Volcanoes: Hawaii
Volcanoes: Hawaii is a course only held in Hawaii. It has the course code VACO.
Course Description
Class is often held through series of powerpoints, whether teacher-made or student-made. Two field trips are taken, hiking in the rainforest and the Big Island trip. On the latter trip, students fly to the Big Island to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Kaimu Beach. The exact schedule depends on timing, but the version of the trip made in 10.2 involved visiting steam vents, sulphur banks, the Jaggar Museum, Thurston Lava Tube, and Halema'uma'u Crater.
Students spend several days talking about the flora and fauna of the islands, the dangers posed by introduced alien species, the Hawaiian climate, and why conservation is important to protect the unique ecosystem and endemic species.
